Turner had made numerous drawings of Durham when he visited the city on his North of England tour in 1797; see in particular the Tweed and Lakes sketchbook (Tate; Turner Bequest XXXV). He would no doubt have wished to make further drawings simply on account of the dramatic setting and majestic grouping of the cathedral and castle which dominate this view. A similar drawing is Tate D04184 (Turner Bequest LXX g); see also the various views in other collections listed in the sketchbook’s Introduction.
