This prospect of Dresden was taken at the end of the Moritzstrasse looking towards Neumarkt, the city’s principal public square. From left to right is the Johanneum (formerly the royal mews and later converted into a picture gallery for the royal collection), the Hotel Stadt Berlin, the Frauenkirche, and the Türkenbrunnen or ‘Turk’s Fountain’ with a statue of the goddess Victoria at its centre.1
Turner has inscribed the numbers ‘11’, ‘7’, ‘5’ over the bays of the Hotel Stadt Berlin and ‘4’, ‘4’, ‘3’, ‘6’ on the building directly in front of the Frauenkirche. There are also the inscriptions ‘Pump’ ‘[...]’ ‘W[...]’ before the fountain.
