Turner Bequest CCCLXI 84a
Pencil on white wove paper, 86 x 111 mm

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation, the slight upper view appears to show Dover Castle to the north, on the cliffs above the harbour; compare the watercolour Dover (D18154; Turner Bequest CCVIII U),1 engraved in 1827 for the Ports of England (Tate impressions: T04828, T04829). The second sketch, albeit the other way up, may be a continuation to the right, or another view of the Kent coast.
For other views of Dover on adjacent pages, see under folio 20 verso (D35523).
