In this undeveloped and summary sketch of the topography around Louvain the lofty spire and transept of the Gothic St Peter’s Church can be seen. The rest of the scene has been left undeveloped, with only a few strokes and dashes of the pencil indicating the rudiments of Turner’s mapping out of the scene. A similar panoramic drawing of Louvain can be found on the following folio (Tate D28060; Turner Bequest CCLXXXVII 10).
For other views of Louvain in this sketchbook see Tate D28044–D28047, D28049, D28054, D28060–D28064; Turner Bequest CCLXXXVII 2a–3a, 4a, 7, 10–12.
