Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Distant View of Fonthill Abbey, with an Aqueduct in the Foreground 1799
D02183
Turner Bequest XLVII 6
Pencil on white wove paper, 333 x 467 mm
Stamped in black ‘XLVII 6’ bottom right
Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Drawn with the page turned horizontally, the large-scale arcade that Turner carefully delineates in the foreground of this view was probably an aqueduct, perhaps taking water either to Fonthill Splendens or to the new Abbey. No trace of it seems to have survived.
