This drawing was made with the page turned horizontally. See folio 3 recto (D03835) for another pencil study of clouds, and further sky studies, using white chalk as well as pencil, on folios 11 recto and 12 recto (D03843, D03844).
There are similar cloud studies in pencil and white chalk in the contemporary Dolbadarn sketchbook, including Tate D01995 and D01996 (Turner Bequest XLVI 2a, 3), and in the Studies for Pictures sketchbook (Tate D03996, D04006, D04144; Turner Bequest LXIX 3, 12, 127), as well as several in pen and ink.
