Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Made with the page turned horizontally, and possibly continuous with folio 3 recto opposite (D01996), this study may be related to the distinctive cloudscape that Turner painted into his large oil painting Conway Castle of about 1803 (private collection).1 There are further cloud studies on folios 4 verso–5 recto and 5 verso (D01998–D02000).
