Joseph Mallord William Turner Cliffs on the Coast 1845

Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 7 Recto:
Cliffs on the Coast 1845
D35346
Turner Bequest CCCLV 7
Pencil on white wove paper, 166 x 70 mm
Inscribed by John Ruskin in red ink ‘7’ top left inverted, ascending vertically
Stamped in black ‘CCCLV–7’ top left inverted, ascending vertically

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
The sketches are inverted relative to the foliation. The principal sketches at the centre appear to continue from those on folio 6 verso opposite (D35345). Turner has inscribed the first of these sketches in pencil with a number ‘1’. Above and below these are scalloped strokes of the pencil, perhaps marking the initiation of a sketch, which Turner has left undeveloped. At the bottom of the page Turner seems to have begun to render a further cliff formation but has also left it undeveloped.
Technical notes:
The paper is spotted in some areas with a black substance.
