Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 11 Verso:
Cliffs ?below Helmsley Castle 1801

Turner Bequest LXXXII 11v
Pencil on white wove paper, 256 x 161 mm

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
This rapid drawing, inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation, is apparently that recorded by Finberg as page ‘12a. Sketch of broken ground’;1 the verso of folio 12 (D05087; Turner Bequest LXXXII 12a) actually bears only an inscription and a pencil mark. The slight outline of a tower appears to relate to the castle drawings on adjacent pages.
