J.M.W. Turner: Sketchbooks, Drawings and Watercolours

Looking west across the River ‘Tweed’ (as labelled by Turner), this view depicts Cardrona Tower and Cardrona House near Innerleithen. The ruined sixteenth-century tower stands on Cardrona Hill at the centre of the sketch, while the gabled end of the 1685 house can be seen to the left beneath Wallace’s Hill. Turner made the sketch as he travelled by road from Peebles to Innerleithen on 2 October 1834; see Tour of Scotland for Scott’s Poetical Works 1834 Tour Introduction. He had already sketched another castle nearby, Horsburgh, on folios 11 verso–12 verso (D26115–D26117). There is another view of Cardrona Tower on folio 12 verso (D26117).
