Turner recorded the subject in his Smaller South Wales sketchbook (Tate D00471; Turner Bequest XXV 10). He returned to the same spot on his tour to Wales in 1798, and drew the scene from this viewpoint a second time in his Cyfarthfa sketchbook (Tate D01642; Turner Bequest XLI 13).
The sheet was exhibited in the Fourth Loan Collection at Sheffield, as recorded in William White’s 1896 catalogue, but Finberg noted it had been withdrawn from the ongoing circulating tour by 1909; as it is not listed in the catalogue for the 1906 Manchester showing,1 the venues between 1896 and 1905 are listed here only tentatively.
