The nineteenth-century route from Rome to Naples passed directly through the town of Capua, and Turner made several sketches of the topography and architecture. This drawing depicts a view from present-day Via Porta Fluviale looking south along the eastern bank of the River Volturno, towards the Duomo (Cathedral) and, on the right hand-side, the dome of Chiesa dell’Annunziata. The composition spills over on the opposite sheet of the double-page spread with the Ponte Romano, see folio 35 (D15623; Turner Bequest CLXXXIV 34). Further studies of Capua can be found on folios 33–34 and 35 verso (D15619–D15621 and D15624; Turner Bequest CLXXXIV 32–33 and 34a).
Inverted in the top right-hand corner of the sheet is part of a view of Cape Misenum and Lake Avernus which continues on the opposite page, see folio 35 (D15623; Turner Bequest CLXXXIV 34).
