Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Owing to its lack of finish relative to the majority of Turner’s 1839 Meuse-Moselle gouaches, this small colour drawing is likely a preliminary work or may have been left deliberately undeveloped. The handling and colouring is similar to the two other gouaches of Alken and the Burg Thurandt (Tate D20223, D29023; Turner Bequest CCXX P, CCXCII 72).
Verso:
Stamped in black with Turner Bequest monogram and ‘CCXXII–H’ bottom left; inscribed in pencil ‘CCXXII H’ bottom right.
