This page begins a series of sketches that Turner made of Bothwell Castle as he returned to Bothwell Bridge along the eastern bank of the River Clyde. They follow sketches of the castle made from various angles close by; see folio 26 (D26309).
The castle is seen here from the eastern bank of the Clyde to the south-east. The sketches that follow on folios 29–30 verso (D26315–D26318) not only record Turner’s changing view of the castle as he walked away from it, but also provide variations on a composition that Turner evidently wished to explore and develop. The view on folio 29 is very similar to this one, though was made from slightly further south, providing a vantage point from which more of the castle is visible.
For a full list of Turner’s sketches of Bothwell Castle see folio 26.
