With the page turned horizontally both ways, the main view is of a Venice waterfront beyond moored boats, which Ian Warrell has noted as the last of a short sequence of Canale della Giudecca sketches (folios 6 verso–9 recto; D31288–D31293).1 The rather cursory treatment of the distant dome, campanile and other selected details makes the precise subject uncertain. Above is a thumbnail sketch of a small bridge with a tower beyond, likely made in the vicinity of the first view.
As noted in the sketchbook’s Introduction, the Venice views on its early pages are intermingled with German sketches from Turner’s return journey.
