Like the academy study on folio 6 recto (D04912; Turner Bequest LXXXI 11) and the slight sketch on folio 11 recto (D04922; Turner Bequest LXXXI 21), this drawing was executed in white chalk alone. Other academy studies of the male nude are on folios 5 recto, 9 recto and 10 recto (D04910, D04918, D04920; Turner Bequest LXXXI 9, 17, 19), while studies of a supine male nude related to Turner’s ideas for historical subjects to be realised as oil paintings are on D04922 (already mentioned), and folios 12 recto, 13 recto and 16 recto (D04924, D04926, D04932; Turner Bequest LXXXI 23, 25, 31).
