This is one of a sequence of life studies between folios 1 recto and 14 recto (D01816–D01826, D01828, D01829; Turner Bequest XLIII 2, 3, 3a, 4–7, 1, 8–10, 12, 13).
Technical notes:
White heightening, evidently lead white, has oxidised from exposure to the atmosphere.
Verso:
Blank, prepared with a red-brown ground; inscribed by National Gallery Keeper Ralph Wornum in pencil ‘one out | R. N. W.’, presumably referring to the extraction of folio 3 recto opposite (D01819; Turner Bequest XLIII 3a) for display; an illegible offset in red ink.
