Plausibly grouped by Finberg with the coastal studies in pencil of about 1792–3, this careful drawing of rigging is consistent with Turner’s evident interest in marine subject matter at that moment. For other studies of boats probably made about this time see Tate D00400, D08190 and D40245 (Turner Bequest XXIII Z, CXIX C, XXIX E [verso]).
