This sheet is difficult to place in the sequence of Turner’s stylistic progress in the years round 1790. It has elements in common with the work of around 1789, but is too sophisticated in its draughtsmanship to be earlier than 1790–1, and may be slightly later. There are colour trials on the verso (D40229).
