Made with the page turned horizontally, this is possibly a rapid sketch of part of The Holme, Dr Thomas Dunham Whitaker’s family seat at Cliviger near Burnley, Lancashire; see Turner’s larger drawing of the house in the contemporary Lancashire and North Wales sketchbook (Tate D01928–D01929; Turner Bequest XLV 14a–15). The drawing on folios 7 verso–8 recto of the present book (D40771, D02003), which shows part of Whalley Abbey, confirms that Turner used this book in that area.
