A small oil painting of this subject, probably dating from about 1797–8, was sold at Christie’s, London, 19 July 1985 (42).1 It bore the traditional title of ‘Middleton Vale, Yorkshire’, but there is no more specific evidence for the identification.

Technical notes:
Until recent conservation this and two other drawings (Tate D36625, D36626; Turner Bequest CCCLXXIX 1, 2) were similarly mounted on buff card. Only a fragment remains of the larger card in this case.
