This rapid sketch, made with the page turned horizontally, may record a particular place visited on the 1798 tour, or may be connected with one of the subject pictures Turner was contemplating in this book: the contorted tree in the right foreground has elements in common with the branches in which figures writhe in the 1793 Marford Mill sketchbook, for instance Tate D00313 (Turner Bequest XX 36a); and see the composition with mountain and bare trees on folio 8 verso (D01476) in this book. The slight note on folio 5 recto opposite (D01469) may be part of the same sequence of thought.
