The drawing is continued on folio 4 recto opposite (Tate D01682; Turner Bequest XLII 7). Given the similarity of medium it is possible that it was executed at the same time as that on folios 6 verso–7 recto (D01687–D01688; Turner Bequest XLII 12–13), which was evidently made while Turner was working at Fonthill in 1799. The use of chalks exemplifies Turner’s attitude to the mid-toned paper of this book: he regarded it as an opportunity to explore tonal structures as well as simple outlines.
