Inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation, the model here is evidently posed as the mythical princess Andromeda chained to the rock. She is seen again in the same position, but drawn from a slightly different angle, in folio 4 recto (D01820; Turner Bequest XLIII 4).
This is one of a sequence of life studies between folios 1 recto and 14 recto (D01816–D01826, D01828, D01829; Turner Bequest XLIII 2, 3, 3a, 4–7, 1, 8–10, 12, 13).
Technical notes:
The page has faded from exposure.
Verso:
Blank, prepared with a red-brown ground; inscribed in pencil, ‘XLIII, 3, a’.
