Despite the considerable evidence that this is a pupil’s drawing, it seems on the whole to be by Turner himself, though very possibly as an ‘improvement’ of a drawing started by Miss Elizabeth Davies, whose name is inscribed on the verso (D40339). For a ‘Mr Davis’ of Lewisham, presumably the father or brother of the pupil mentioned here, see the Smaller South Wales sketchbook (Tate D00462; Turner Bequest XXV 1).
Technical notes:
The surface of the watercolour is much abraded and stained.
