The slight and indistinct horizontal sketch made on this page is perhaps related to Turner’s preparations for the painting Fishermen upon a Lee–Shore, in Squally Weather (Southampton Art Gallery),1 for which there are further studies at the end of this book (folios 75 verso, 76 recto, 77 verso, and inside the back cover; D05155–D05158; Turner Bequest LXXXII 75a, 76, 76a, 77) and elsewhere, for example in the Calais Pier sketchbook (Tate D04986–D04987, D04998–D04999, D05002–D05003; Turner Bequest LXXXI 84–85, 96–97, 100–101).
At the top right, descending vertically in relation to the drawing, is the usual endorsement by the Executors of the Turner Bequest, Henry Scott Trimmer, Charles Lock Eastlake and John Prescott Knight in pen and ink ‘No 147. | H.S. Trimmer’ and in pencil ‘C.L.E.’ and ‘JPK’; descending at the bottom right is a separate pencil note by the National Gallery Keeper Ralph Nicholson Wornum (1812–1877), ‘4 out. | R.N.W–’, apparently referring to that number of leaves having been extracted from the sketchbook.
