Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Here Turner has rendered a view of the Schlossberg, a hill overlooking the town of Teplitz in Bohemia (now Teplice in the Czech Republic). The Schlossberg is crowned by a medieval fortification, once a key enemy stronghold during the Thirty Years’ War (1618–48). Two figures can be seen walking up the hill towards the castle. See also Tate D30327–D30330; Turner Bequest CCCI 16a–18.
With the sketchbook turned upright, in accordance with the foliation, Turner has also dashed off a sketch of a standing figure carrying a bundle on their head or shoulders. Illegible notes are inscribed below the figure.
