Behind The Scenes

Conserving Modern Oil Paintings

How can science help us safeguard 20th and 21st century oil paintings for future generations?

Modern oil paints are behaving in unexpected ways as they age, challenging the traditional methods and knowledge developed by conservators. Hear from experts as they explain the work they do in order to help preserve these works for future generations to enjoy.

Cleaning Modern Oil Paints (CMOP) is a collaborative European research project. Together researchers from partner institutions are delving deeply into the chemistry of modern paints to understand how and why works of art made with modern oils differ from older works, and how best to look after them in the coming years.
