Neue Slowenische Kunst, Laibach
Neue Slowenische Kunst (the name is the German translation of New Slovenian Art) was formed at a time of upheaval during the country’s separation from former Yugoslavia. The collective consisted of four main groups: the painting collective Irwin; an artist-musician group called Laibach; a theatre collective known as Scipion Nasice Sisters; and the design group New Collectivism.
Together they addressed the the complicated relationship between culture and a national identity that had been repeatedly compromised by successive occupations.
The work of NSK has informed many successive generations of artists in Eastern Europe, particularly with those working in the fields of activism and collectivism.
