Press cutting relating to STAG auction Building work began in June 1991 and took two years to complete. Constructed of a concrete and masonry frame and finished with glass bricks and plain white walls, it cost a total of £3.3m.

Of crucial importance to the development of the gallery was the St Ives Tate Action Group (STAG) set up in 1989 which did much to raise awareness and local support for the project and raised £100,000 towards the building costs and a further £35,000 to equip the education room. Other notable donors were the Henry Moore Foundation and, the largest single donor, the European Regional Development Fund.
