The Thank Goodness Club was created by artist Andrea Mason in 2009 in collaboration with Tate Modern, Better Bankside and the Sumner Estate.
A series of events over the year included Thank Goodness for… Bringing and Taking, a recession busting bring and take event where you could bring items to give away and take what you fancy. Another, Thank Goodness for…Trees was produced in collaboration with Better Bankside – residents from the Sumner Estate were invited to plant 11 trees in the Sumner Buildings Garden and decorate them with ribbons and trinkets to celebrate. West Ham United Football Club also were invited to give free football sessions to younger residents.
Finally, the Peabody Estate hosted the Mad Draw Tea Party. Participants were invited to draw the person sat opposite them, which ended up as commemorative Thank Goodness Club tea towels for local residents. Afterwards, cucumber sandwiches and fancy cakes were the order of the day.
