This research project was a partnership between Tate Liverpool and North West Disability Arts Forum, with some funding from engage’s en-vision programme. The project aimed to work with disabled and deaf young people to identify ways to support them in accessing the Gallery and Young Tate more independently. Lead Artist Ross Clarke, closely supported by three Young Tate Leaders, worked in the exhibition DLA Piper Series International Modern Art, and in the Education Studio, exploring issues covering themes such as Identity and the Environment.

The Young Tate Leaders worked closely with the participants to build trust and confidence, their observations and discussions providing feedback to Tate Liverpool. The legacy of this programme is a commitment to providing mentoring and support to disabled and deaf young people as they gain more confidence in attending Young Tate activities like ArtPad during the Summer. We hope to build on the relationship with the Special Schools involved in Inside/Out by extending this approach to more young people from October 2006.
