Main Who is it for? Value of Art is an online resource aimed at community group leaders and support staff, exploring frequently asked questions about modern art. The content and structure of this site has been developed by practising artists and a group of community group leaders. Why is it useful to me? It contains contextual information about artists and artworks, suggestions for gallery activities and a dedicated discussion area. Value of Art provides adaptable resources to support a wide range of adult groups and can be used before or after a visit to Tate Modern.
Ways of Working Reflections Forum Casebook
We know that community group leaders work with a wide range of audiences including adults in non-formal education, social and health settings. Since Tate Modern opened in 2000 we have tried and tested all the activities we suggest on this site with a wide range of adult groups involved in community education. We suggest that your knowledge of your specific group and their interests will guide you in selecting artworks and activities and adapting these where necessary.

We aim for this site to be a helpful resource before or after your visit to Tate Modern. And don't forget to share your thoughts and ideas with us in the Forum.
Russian Doll   The Russian Doll has become an icon for Value of Art. Suggested by a community group leader participating in the project, it represents the 'unpacking' of possible meanings in artworks and also the way in which we can find value in art on a number of different levels.

Throughout this site, you will find the dolls at the top of your page as a navigational aid. The principle is simple - the further into site you explore, the smaller the dolls get. Clicking on the largest doll will always bring you back here.

Value of Art was initiated by Tate Modern's Community Programme. In 2001 a pilot project took place working with Blackfriars Settlement. The documentation of the pilot project can be viewed here.
