Tate Britain
Since its inception in 1897, Tate Britain has become the world centre for the understanding and enjoyment of British art with a 50 per cent increase in visitor numbers in the last five years.
We must now respond to the need for improvements to gallery spaces and visitor facilities, and to the overwhelming demand for our learning programmes.
Tate has therefore conceived a £45 million development of Tate Britain, to improve the quality of the public experience at Tate Britain, to realise the building’s potential to display and raise the profile of British art, and to increase learning opportunities.
The Benefits
- Refurbishment of gallery spaces will improve Tate’s capacity for display of art and raise standards of collection care
- Development will draw visitors more effectively to the Collection and exhibitions, improving orientation, circulation and access
- Project will place learning at the heart of Tate Britain. Learning programme will have the space to better meet its potential and serve new and broader audiences
- Visitor facilities will be transformed through the re-commissioning of the architecturally significant spaces on the upper floor
