Richard Long has created a substantial and rich body of work which represents a continuous dialogue in the relationship between man and nature. Long's art is one of direct, dynamic physical engagement with the landscape. His decision in 1967 to make a sculpture by walking established the defining characteristic of his art and challenged the idea of what a sculpture could be. Through the medium of walking, a work of art could now be potentially many hundreds of miles long, with time as the fourth dimension, thus radically redefining the boundaries of art.

Many of the sculptures made along the way of his walks are temporary and are recorded by photographs. Since 1969 Long has also documented his works with text works, recording particular ideas, relationships, events, images, locations, measurements, materials or experiences related to a walk. This room includes a group of text and photo works that relate the artist to particular places both near and far, and to cosmic events such as eclipses and a full moon on midwinter's night.
