Richard Long (b 1945) has been making sculpture from natural and elemental materials since the 1960s. Experiencing nature directly through the act of walking in the landscape, his sculptures made along the way are often temporary and are recorded in photographs. Other walks, undertaken to follow and realise a particular idea, are recorded in text works, such as Walking in a Moving World, displayed in this space.

Richard Long has created a substantial and varied body of work in which the relationship between man and nature is his central concern. Long's art is one of direct, dynamic, physical involvement with landscape. Experiencing nature directly through the act of walking, Long creates sculptures from natural and elemental materials. Since 1970, he has used mud to make works in gallery spaces. These have a spontaneous impact and are intimately connected to the most ancient forms of human mark making.
