An opportunity to put the current exhibition Light into Colour: Turner in the South West into a wider context. Sam Smiles will focus on further examples of the work Turner produced, inspired by this region, exploring in some detail his response to particular places. The West Country also provided Turner with a chance to explore qualities of light and colour, something which was of professional concern to him in the 1810s. In this respect, Turner's work in Devon and Cornwall can be seen as being part of his artistic development, as he begins to use colour to move from a naturalistic to a more 'poetic' response to landscape.
