In order to judge the options for further development of the Gallery, Cornwall County Council, Tate and Penwith District Council agreed that the project should:
- Ensure Tate St Ives and Cornwall continue to be distinctive, quality tourist destinations
- Improve the local and regional economy and increase year-round employment
- Attract new local and regional audiences, and build the involvement of the local community with the Gallery
- Increase access to, and understanding of, the cultural heritage of St Ives
- Improve access to the Tate Collection, widening the range of works that can be seen in Cornwall
- Increase educational opportunities, supporting the development of a knowledge-based economy* in the South West
- Confirm Penwith as a contemporary creative location supporting the development of the creative industries in the area
- Develop 'green' gallery facilities which will contribute to Cornwall's profile as the green peninsular, and will offer a model for other European rural regions
The Project Partners have assessed the public consultation feedback against these aims to ensure any development is worthwhile.
