The site

Location

Tate St Ives is in St Ives, a small town in the far west of Cornwall. The gallery is on the west side of the town and its peninsula, facing Porthmeor Beach and the Atlantic Ocean. Located on the sea front, the site was formerly used as a gas works.

The Tate St Ives 2 extension site is on part of an area previously occupied by the Meadow Flats residential units. To the north there is a new housing scheme by Penwith Housing Association, which replaces the flats, to the east the gallery. To the south is the Barnoon Car Park and to the west the Barnoon Cemetery.

The site for the new extension is 1320m2 or 0.1317 hectares; it has a frontage of approximately 27m and a depth that varies from 30m to 45m.
