Make the Face of an Angel
On top of a tall white plinth sits the blindfolded head of the Angel of Anarchy. The artist Eileen Agar has used interesting materials such as textiles and feathers over a plaster-cast head to create this artwork. Why do you think she chose these materials? If the angel came to life, what do you think she might say? What sort of voice do you think she might have? How does she make you feel?
Create your own angel using interesting materials. Think about the different kind of materials you could use to express the angel's character.
Top tips!
- What will your angel be like? Will it be friendly, naughty, angry or funny?
- You could use a balloon for the shape of the head, a yoghurt container for the neck and build up your sculpture with different layers of materials.
- You could also make a plaster-cast face out of a mould. You will need to buy some plaster of paris and a plastic mould of a face (you can buy these at art supply shops). Pour the plaster into the mould and wait until it sets rock hard. When it has set, turn it out of the mould and use your interesting materials to create your angel.
- Give your angel a name!
Can you help us? We don't have any images from this activity. Why not e-mail us a photograph of the angel you have created and we will add it to the Zoom Room. E-mail your images to kids@tate.org.uk.
