University College Falmouth: MA Curatorial Practice

MA Curatorial Practice is a one-year, full-time postgraduate course of study. University College Falmouth collaborates with three main partners – Tate St Ives, Newlyn Art Gallery and the Exchange, and ProjectBase – to provide opportunities for students to develop the critical and practical skills required for curating in the field of international contemporary art. The course puts dialogue with artists and exploration of art-world structures at the heart of the learning process. Tate St Ives and its fellow partner organisations give students experience of the curatorial role within the different contexts of a national museum, a publically-funded gallery and a visual arts commissioning agency.

Through seminars, workshops, lectures and visits - delivered by academic staff, partner organisations and other national and international art-world professionals - the course provides a context in which to develop and critique curatorial practice, and to establish networks and contacts relevant to the students' specific areas of interest.

The course is structured over three 15-week study blocks or terms. The second study block comprises two projects which aim to give students direct experience of professional curatorial process. Supervised by staff at Tate St Ives, students are be asked to devise a hypothetical display of contemporary art drawn from Tate’s collection. The student cohort also works as a team to deliver an exhibition of contemporary art at Newlyn Art Gallery.
