Registering to use the main Library collection
As a Library Reader you will have access to the main reading room, with reference access to the Library's collection of exhibition catalogues, books and journals. Membership is for one year and is renewable. On your first visit, you must:
- read the Research Centre regulations, complete and sign a registration form (PDF document)
- show a form of ID (e.g. Tate member's card, credit card)
Registering to use the Archive, Gallery Records and Library special collections
As an Archive Reader you will have access to both the main reading room and the archive & specials reading room. You will be able to consult the unique, unpublished material held in our collections. Membership is for one year and is renewable. On your first visit, you must bring proof of your current home address and a separate form of photographic ID from this lists below:

All documents must be originals. Print out and photocopies will not be accepted.
* These documents can only be used as either proof of address or proof of identity. They cannot be used for both. Please note that some driving licences and national identity cards do not show address and we are therefore not able to accept these as proof of address
** These documents must be dated within the last 3 months
You will also be photographed for our membership database on your first visit, this is to identify you on future visits. If you prefer you can supply a passport photograph when registering.

University / college staff and research students registering via SCONUL Access
As a SCONUL Access Reader you will have the same access as a Library Reader, plus a borrowing entitlement of two items. On your first visit, you must bring
- your SCONUL Access card
- current ID from your university or college
