About the catalogues

Separate on-line catalogues give access to the Library and Archive collections and include all material converted from earlier manual catalogues and catalogued since computerisation in the 1990s. The records converted from the former card catalogues and finding aids may be briefer and of lower standard than current cataloguing.

The Library catalogue consists of records for books (including artists' books), exhibition catalogues, permanent and private collection catalogues, audio visual material (including that held in the Archive) and current journals. It does not hold records for auction catalogues, museum bulletins or many of the journals that have ceased publication. For information about these collections, contact the Research Centre.

The catalogue also includes brief acquisition records for items that are on order (and not yet received) and for items that are in-process (items received but not yet fully catalogued).

Use the on-line help integrated in the catalogue, or contact the Research Centre if you need further assistance.

The Archive catalogue consists of records for Tate Archive which covers British Art since 1900 (artists' and institutional archives, posters and microform) and the Tate Public Records (Tate's own historic records). However, audio-visual material held in the Archive is accessible only on the Library catalogue.

Most archives are catalogued as collections, in a hierarchical structure, with a top level record describing the whole collection, second level records covering specific groups of material (e.g. correspondence) and further levels providing more detail within those groups.

You may search solely at collection level, which will identify whole collections relating to a specific person or group. Alternatively you can do a free text search (Any text) which will locate a word or phrase appearing in any field, in any record at any level. However it is advisable to be as specific as possible or limit your search by date or additional search terms.

For further help in searching this catalogue please contact the Research Centre.
