Custom Prints
The Custom Print Service runs in tandem with Art on Demand.
Print Service
The Custom Print Service offers unframed reproduction prints of almost all artworks from Tate's collection. Each order is individually digitally printed as and when the order is received and is therefore a bespoke product. The prints are supplied for personal and/or private use only.
The Source
The prints are generated from colour transparencies produced by Tate Photography, the specialist fine art photographic department of Tate. They include colour bars and greyscales to allow for colour quality checking during the printing process. In instances where the artwork requested has not been photographed we produce a new transparency for you and add an additional fee to cover this cost.
Printing
The custom prints are produced by fine art printers who aim to produce a print as near to the original artwork as possible. All transparencies are scanned via high-resolution (from 300dpi to 8000 dpi depending on output) ICT drum or Imacon scanners and then printed using either “hi-spec” bubble or ink jet printers. The image on the print will have colour and greyscale bars omitted and will be cropped to within the edges of the artwork, to provide a clean border. We do not offer a framing or stretching service in this instance but the quality of the finished product is high and many customers do frame these prints to hang on the wall.
The Prints
Custom prints are available on a selection of papers; photographic paper (semi-gloss - Kodak paper, Oyster finish), art paper (watercolour matt finish - Fine Art German Etching) or canvas (un-stretched, matt finish - 100% natural cotton, Warhol canvas, 415gsm). We have a selection of sizes available in each format to choose from, however please note that the dimensions refer to the size of the paper and not the size the image is reproduced at. The image will be reproduced as large as possible on the specified paper, keeping the proportions of the original artwork and making available a white border so as to ease framing of the print if desired. The technical term for these prints is R-type as they are produced from transparencies and not negatives.
Copyright
Many of Tate's artworks are still in copyright, which lasts for 70 years after the death of the artist. Tate, where possible, has cleared copyright on your behalf and a copyright fee payable to the artists' estates is included in the cost of the print. Some estates have restricted the type of paper used and the size the image is reproduced at, in these instances we will inform you prior to confirming the order and taking payment. No further reproduction of the work is permitted unless authorised in writing by the copyright owner or their agent and Tate Images.
Delivery
In the vast majority of cases we can turn a custom print order around within 14-21 days from date of payment. Payment is due prior to printing. However, please be aware that all orders are subject to the artwork being available in a transparency format, and being copyright cleared by the copyright holder. Where new photography or copyright permission is required an order can take an additional 6-8 weeks. In some rare cases we may not be able to fulfil your request.
New Photography
When the original artwork is not already photographed we charge an additional fee of £50.00 + VAT per transparency for new photography. Please allow an additional 6 - 8 weeks for the completion of your order.
