UBS Openings: The Long Weekend is one of the world’s most dynamic celebrations of film, music, performance and visual art, set within the iconic architecture of Tate Modern. The four-day event, over the late May bank holiday, features a series of remarkable and unmissable one-off performances by celebrated international artists in the dramatic setting of the Turbine Hall as well as a full programme of family activities, workshops and games for all ages.

French artist Mathieu Briand transforms the Turbine Hall into a gigantic sound installation: SYS*011. Mie>AbE/SoS\ SYS*010, also known as the Spiral. Briand’s installation will create a massive, experimental sound recording studio and performance space. Participants in the family workshop run by Sonic Arts Network leader Duncan Chapman will perform a sound manipulation.

Andy Warhol’s first film, Sleep 1963, is screened throughout the night accompanied by a re-creation of the musical performance that inspired it, John Cage’s historic 1963 staging of Erik Satie’s epic repetitive work for piano, Vexations (1893). Featuring performances by ten pianists including Gavin Bryars, Michael Nyman, Tania Chen and Joshua Rifkin. Introduced with a live performance by John Giorno, the subject of the film.

The event runs all night but ticket holders can drop in and out. Food and drink will be available during the night. Feel free to bring a sleeping bag.

This giant board game created especially for families takes place on the Turbine Hall Bridge.
