California is in for a hot battle over capital punishment centred on the Chessman case but the indications are that if Chessman’s life is eventually spared it will not be the work of the California State Legislature. A poll taken by United Press International among members of the Senate and the Assembly shows a majority in favour of retaining the death penalty

Israel and the Palestinians were close to all-out war last night after a state of emergency was declared in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. The death toll in two days of fighting had reached 55. Tanks were sent into the area for the first time since it was captured from the Arabs in the 1967 Six Day War.
