Tony Godfrey on Open Systems
Tony Godfrey, Academic Director of Sotheby’s Institute, London and author of Conceptual Art (Phaidon, 1998), discusses the historical context behind the Open Systems: Rethinking Art c.1970 exhibition. The mid 1960s saw a radical departure from art's traditional focus on the object, to wide-ranging experiments with media that included installation, photography, performance, film and video. In his talk, Godfrey explores why so many artists from this period began to make work that was more responsive to the world around them, and considers the significance of their adoption of experimental aesthetic systems.
