Marcus Verhagen on August Strindberg

Friday 4 March 2005, 18.30–19.30

Art historian and critic Marcus Verhagen talks about Tate Modern’s major exhibition of paintings and photography by the Swedish polymath August Strindberg.

A celebrated writer of novels, plays, poetry, scientific essays and letters, Strindberg has also been recognised as an important precursor of modern visual art. He was one of the first people to show an understanding for the development of Impressionism in Paris, and when asked by his friend Paul Gauguin to write a preface for an exhibition, his letter of refusal was so eloquent that Gauguin asked to use it in the catalogue anyway! This talk will explore the visual production, life and personality of this extraordinarily gifted man.
