Workshops

KS1-5

Our creative two-hour workshops support your work in class, aiming to develop students' knowledge, investigative skills, and critical and creative thinking. Pupils are encouraged to express their reactions to what they see by thinking, talking and making art and take part in discussion and activities in groups. Accompanying adults get involved and all students must bring sketchbooks.

All workshops are suitable for KS5 students. We are currently researching and redesigning our provision for students from KS5 and Art and Design Foundation Studies. If you have particular needs you want to discuss, call 020 7401 5065.

Themes discussed in workshops vary depending on which works are on display and other school groups' requirements.

  • different meanings

Poetry and Dream

Working with surrealist art, the artist leading your workshop may address themes such as:

  • Alternative worlds
  • The subconscious mind
  • Juxtaposition
  • Metamorphosis and transformation.

Idea and Object

With reference to the minimalist art on display, your group could explore:

  • The history and identity of the object
  • and the found object
  • The language of shape
  • How we interact with and perceive art.

States of Flux

Exploring cubist, futurist and vorticist works, your group may consider:

  • The artist's role in society
  • The familiar and the unusual
  • How artists can comment on society.

Working with Sketchbooks

Foster your group's imagination and curiosity by using sketchbooks to collect and progress ideas, investigate art and for research purposes. This session develops both teachers' and students' understanding of the sketchbook as a place for recording observations and thoughts on contemporary art.

Art and Language

Speaking and listening are key elements of communicating ideas about art, from annotating drawings and jotting down ideas to expressing reactions to art works. This workshop explores how verbal and written responses to art can be used to increase students' understanding of art, and supports work on art and literacy by focusing on developing visual literacy.

Art and the Contemporary Citizen

Students consider the local, national and global communities they inhabit and their role within them in this workshop, which encourages them to develop physical, cultural, social, political and gender awareness. In the session you may explore how art can act as an agent of change, showing us snapshots of history.

Term-time Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10.00 and 13.00
Two sessions in each time slot (maximum of 15 students)

Special Educational Needs

These workshops are designed for students with physical, cognitive or sensory difficulties or disabilities. Sessions are led by artists with extensive SEN experience, and are carefully planned and tailored to your specific needs. By engaging in a series of practical and gallery-based activities, students are made to feel welcome, unhurried and inspired. Sessions work best if students are accompanied by several support staff.

You can either choose the theme of one of the workshops listed above, or pick one of our specially designed themes:

  • Materials and Process (how art is made)
  • What's in an Art Gallery? (introducing the modern art museum through its collection and architecture)
  • Working with Sketchbooks (drawing in the gallery)

Call 020 7401 5234 to discuss your booking in advance and complete a questionnaire before you visit.

Each school can book two workshops per term on alternating Thursday mornings and afternoons.

We recommend group sizes of up to 10 depending on the needs of the group, supported by appropriate staffing ratios from the visiting organisation.

To reserve a parking space or wheelchair, call 020 7887 8888.

Special Educational Needs
