opened my perception to new ideas” – Eva.

Canvas Big Ideas: Living Sculptures
Saturday 14 April 2007
The second Big Ideas accompanying the Gilbert & George
exhibition was concentrating on the artists’ role
as living sculptures. After experiencing ourselves as animated
cyber figures with the help of the Play station 2 program,
I Toy, the group went on to discuss the influence of body
and performance art and how slowly but surely the boundaries
between art and life were beginning to blur and the human
being was turning himself into a living sculpture. The
photographer Eugenie Shinkle gave the debate an art historical
background and guided the group to the gallery to reflect
on the topics discussed through the work of Gilbert & Georges.
The event was a great success, and in a playful manner
we learned a lot.

Big Ideas: Image
and Scandal
Saturday 24 March 2007
Image & Scandal was based on the Gilbert & George exhibition. Small groups
looked at the artwork and used word association to stimulate discussion. David
Dibosa, senior lecturer at Wimbledon School of Art, gave a talk about Gilbert & George’s
work, and surprised the group with an image of one they had made with him in
the early 80s as a model. We went on to debate whether the works could still
be seen as scandalous today and how they have changed over the last few decades.

- Raw Canvas Summer
Course: Construction of Colour: Hélio Oiticica
This summer course has been such a massive success. Literally
constructive, we pushed our participants to the limits of their architectural
ability, making models, sculptures and full sized 1:1 ratio installations
to live, work and play in. We invited the public in to our made spaces
and brought Helio’s ideas of interaction alive again!! The final
show brought all this construction together, making small scale pieces
in cardboard boxes, using all the skills and ideas gathered over the
four days. Ace!!

- Raw Canvas at The
Long Weekend 2007
...The Raw Canvas Yurt was be a concoction of acoustic
performances, imaginative creations, chill out zones and saw the return
of infamous Raw Canvas Challenge! The RC challenge invited participants
to dress up, find clues to compete against time and impress the public
with their surreal poems and sculptures! Those feeling more sedate
could sit back and waste the weekend away while being serenaded by
some of London’s finest buskers, or those in a creative mood
could make their very own finger, sock, glove, string or shadow Puppets
and put on their very own Puppet show!

- Raw Canvas Summer
Course: Documenting Dalí: 18 to 23year olds

- Raw Canvas Summer
Course: Documenting Dalí: 15 to 17 year olds

- Participants started off by exploring objects representing fear and
desire, creating short surreal animations and dressing up to produce
dramatic tableaux. Everyone was introduced to the surreal elements
of Dali’s work and encouraged to create their own surrealist
inspired films using storyboards, video cameras and editing software
to create their final surrealist films, all supported by artists from
Film & Video Workshop.

- Participants comment – “I enjoyed the creative environment
and the opportunity to work with different mediums. I love the plasticine,
it took me back to yesteryear”
